Welcome to 22lookup!
is soware has been designed to be an ecient adjunct to anyone learning Torah. Whether
Torah She b’ksav, Torah She Baal Peh, or Halacha, 22lookup has features that will speed up
the “side” necessities, looking up words in the dictionary, nding the location of a word or
phrase, nding the halachos referred to on a blatt of Shas by the superscript letters, and in
several other areas. Via the command-line interface, users can rapidly access this information
and return to their studies that much quicker.
Additionally, 22lookup was designed in a modular fashion making possible Wiki-type com-
munity involvement. As time goes forward, we will be taking suggestions, new modules, and
other side projects from the user community in an eort to improve 22lookup for all.
22lookup will be released rst on the Mac, then on iPhone, iPad, and Android devices and
nally on the Windows platform. A website, 22lookup.org, will provide instructional videos,
a forum, and web based support. While the soware must be acquired and registered using
the internet, the app, in its normal usage, is not dependent upon the internet by any means.
We trust you will nd your experience with 22lookup valuable. Be sure to take the Tour
(outlined in the TOUR chapter of this manual) in order to become familiar with 22lookup’s
command-line approach.

Display
e fastest way to understand the capabilities of 22lookup is to jump right in and type ‘tour’ in
the lower section of the program display and then enter ‘tour preliminaries’ or any other listed
tour to bring up a description or a sequence of inputs that will demonstrate the program’s capa-
bilites. Try all the commands in each tour and visualize the display that 22lookup provides in the
upper (or browser) window.
If you are a ‘gure it out for yourself ’ kind of person, you might really enjoy 22lookup. e com-
mands, once you try them, will hopefully seem logical and intuitive and in case you forget a step,
you can always bring up the help page or the tour to see the correct form of the command. So,
tour and enjoy.
If you are wondering why 22lookup was implemented with a command line entry approach as
opposed to a ‘GUI’ based set of buttons and input boxes... please nd an explanation for this ap-
proach in the Appendix.
If you are still with me... I will try to make this as easy as possible.
22lookup has two major display modes... ‘word-by-word’ and ‘show.’ ese modes are essentially
opposites and their usage can be controlled by a global setting on the Preferences tab. [22Look-
up->Preferences]. An illustration will serve to demonstrate.
In this diagram, a section has been displayed from Rambam’s Mishneh Torah using ‘Show’
mode whereby the entire contents of the Perek & Halacha have been displayed. e le side of
the screen displays the reference information showing the location of the text in the right most
window. e show mode is capable of displaying much more information than a single instance.
An easy modication of the command ‘rambam TMT 1 1’ to ‘rambam TMT 1 1-’ would cause

all lines in the rst perek of Sefer ת”סו הזוזמו ןיליפת תוכלה. e explanation behind this is that
TMT is a code for this sefer, the next 1 indicates the rst perek and the ‘1-’ means beginning with
halacha 1 and ending with the last halacha of the perek.
e immediately above diagram depicts word-by-word mode. In this example the user entered
the command ‘blatt megillah 11b wbw’ or ‘blatt megillah 11b’ [if the global display variable was
set to word-by-word]. In the le-most column an arbitrary index is displayed. e next column
features either a percentage or the actual line on the amud where the text is found along with the
number of the word on the given line counting, of course, from the right. Example: ‘1:5’ means
the h word on the rst line on the Maseches Megillah 11b.
e third column lists the actual word and the right-most column provides a denition of that
word if it was looked up in a dictionary. Each Jastrow entry also displays the page number in that
dictionary where the entry can be found because it is oen the case that Jastrow provides much
more information relative to the entry word than can be displayed here.
It may be noticed that there are sometimes multiple lines for a given entry. is occurs because
the word list evolved over time and the database is not unique. Words listed in a white back-
ground were not found in the database and the 22lookup website (http://www.22lookup.org) will
be providing users the opportunity to augment the denitions database in order to minimize
occurrences of ‘white lines.’
We will now give a quick overview of commands that are aected by ‘wbw’ and ‘show’

erefore, to look up the denitions of the words on daf 11b of maseches Megillah, one would
type in “blatt megillah 11b wbw” or to display the text of daf 11b of maseches Megillah one would
type “blatt megillah 11b show”. Naturally, if the global display mode is set to Word-By-Word,
“blatt megillah 11b” would be sucient and a user wishing to see the text of the daf would have
to override the global setting by specically including ‘show’ in the command, i.e., “blatt megillah
11b show”. Conversely, if the global display mode is set to Show, a user wising to display the text
would be able to type “blatt megillah 11b” while a user wishing to see denitions for each word
would have to override the default and include ‘wbw’ in the command, i.e., “blatt megillah 11b
w b w ”.

Note: the rest of the manual will assume the user is familiar with the ‘wbw’ vs ‘show’ concept so
further examples will include ‘wbw’ or ‘show’ only where needed for clarity. Please remember that
setting the global default in Preferences governs the behavior of the display in case neither ‘wbw’
nor ‘show” is explicitly included in the command.
ere are many users who do not need denitions of the simpler words. 22lookup has been con-
structed with a “tier” feature that may be used to specify the frequency of words to be ignored.
e frequency of every word on every blatt of Shas has been cataloged. Asking 22lookup to
provide denitions of words which appear in the blatt of Shas less than 25 times may be accom-
plished by:
“blatt niddah 14a wbw tier:25” or “blatt niddah 14a tier:25 wbw” or in case the global display
setting has been set to Word-by-Word... “blatt niddah 14a tier:25”
is command will skip words that appear more than 25 times and provide denitions only for
words that appear 25 times or less.
In response to these commands, 22lookup will supply the word, the denition (if it exists), the
masechta, the daf, and the percent of the way down the page (by word count). In the Premium
version, instead of the percentage, 22lookup will display the line number and the number of the
word on the line for the display word.
Other methods to display a blatt include “tzura” (which displays an amud in standard Vilna form)
and “map” (which presents the text of the amud and allows a user to highlight the location of
words within the amud). Please refer to “tour tzura” and “tour map” as well as the details con-
tained in the following pages of this manual for further information.

Naturally, nedarim and 25a are place holders; “nedarim” may be replaced with the name of any
masechta in Shas Bavli using the ocial spelling [enter the command “spelling” to see all accept-
ed values] and “25a” may be replaced with any legal dafamud formed as the page number fol-
lowed by ‘a’ or ‘b’ to indicate the amud.
Like the blatt command, tier:frequency may be added
Using a zero aer many 22lookup commands, provides a menu. It is not reasonable to have users
enter the entire “Dibbur haMaskil” in order to reference a Rashi commentary. Rather, a user can
enter a zero at the end of the command string and then select the associated reference number in
order to access the desired Rashi commentary. For example:

Mishneh Torah is grouped into 42 Perakim contained within 14 Volumes. Within each perek
there are many halachos. In order to display one halacha of Mishneh Torah, there has to be a way
to reference the halacha, the perek, and the volume. e below tables list three letter “keys” in
capital letters which allow rapid access to Mishneh Torah. Rather than typing the entire name of
the perek, the three letter key (in most cases derived from the English description) allows the user

Communicating with 22lookup in order to perform a search may be done using Hebrew or Re-
verse English to indicate the desired target string. As is explained in “Reverse English” within the
Appendix, 22lookup uses Reverse English as its primary mode for internal operations and for a
simple user interface. Entering a Hebrew string will cause the following steps... the command-line
interpreter will recognize Hebrew characters, will convert them to Reverse English, and then the
command will be performed. Naturally, the displayed results will be shown in Hebrew/Aramaic.
Commands tagged with the [PREMIUM] ag will only function if the user is registered and
known to 22lookup as a Premium Member.
Following the “TOUR” will demonstrate these ideas so hopefully the user will be comfortable
with this approach by the time searches are considered. 22lookup was designed for a fast user
experience and we believe that our Reverse English implementation will allow this to be realized.
As with any search engine, 22lookup may experience very long response times when nding in-
stance of common words. For example, the most common word in Shas Bavli (appearing 32,633
times) is רמא. If a user chooses to search for רמא, he/she is going to have to wait a very, very long
time. All of the ‘nds’ have to be arranged and then the HTML for display in the upper window
display has to be created, and nally the display has to be updated. It might take hours. And...
22lookup does not have a “kill command” feature which means that a user who does not want to
wait for the completion of the command will have to “Force Quit” 22lookup. As we enhance the
app, we welcome to take suggestions for improvements.
Two Types of Searches
A Contiguous Search
22lookup attempts to nd strings which are an exact
match to the entire search_string.

e search_string consists of three parts which can
be broken down as follows; beginning_search_string,
maximum_word_distance, ending_search_string.
In this case 22lookup will attempt to nd instance
where the beginning_search_string and ending_
search_string are found with no more than the num-
ber of words specied by maximum_word_distance
between them.
Please refer to the mention of Rav Huna and the
meturgaman in the below text for a detailed explana-
tion of this concept.

Just to be unambiguous, when we refer to the “blatt” we are talking about the central area on a
page of the Talmud where the Mishna and Gemara are found. To eect a search through the blatt
of Talmud Bavli, 22lookup expects a command line in the form of the word “search” followed by
the word “blatt” followed by the requested string to search for. If 22lookup is successful in nding
the search string, the program will detail all places where the string was found along with some
words preceeding and following the search string so that the user can determine the relevance of
each nd. Additionally, the actual line number on the page and the word number on that line will
be displayed in the case of a premium member while a standard user will see the percentage down
the page where the string may be found. (is percentage is actually a percent by word count
rather than a percentage by line count. )

A few cautionary words about the blatt search. First, please be aware that not all printings of
the Talmud are exactly the same. Sometimes one version will use an abbreviation where anoth-
er version will spell out the words. 22lookup utilizes a digital version of the Talmud text which
seems very close to the common printed versions however we can not make the claim that the
internal representation is exact. In otherwords, it may not be wise to make an absolute claim that
a word appears a certain number of times in Shas based on the 22lookup display at the top of the
page. For example, searching for “Rabbi Akiva” in the text will undoubtedly produce a dierent
frequency if the results of 22lookup are compared to Sefaria, Bar Ilan Responsa, etc. Rabbi Akiva
may appear as אביקע יבר in one Gemara while another Gemara uses the abbreviation ע”ר in the
corresponding location.
Another small issue has to do with quotation marks within a search string. e following exam-
ples will search successfully for the indicated search string.

We sincerely hope that premium members will enjoy the accuracy of the line number and word
number reporting. Needless to say, implementaton of this feature was challenging but worthwhile
in hopes that users will save incremental time that can better be spent on learning.
Search strings are great when one knows the entire string to be searched for. When it happens
that someone remembers a concept, remembers two of the words the Talmud uses to discuss that
topic but the two words might be separated by some number of intervening words, 22lookup al-
lows search strings whereby the user can indicate a maximum distance between these two words.
Let’s illustrate this with an example.

Supposing someone remembers that the Gemara brings a story of Rav Huna teaching a drasha
with 13 meturgamen broadcasting to more than 800 talmidim. e story explains that all the
talmidim where sitting on top of their cloaks and that when the drasha concluded and the talmi-
dim stood up and shook out the dust from their cloaks, the light of the sun was obscured. Even in
Eretz Yisroel the light of the sun was obscured. Now it is desired to nd the location of this story
in Shas. What might the user remember? Rav Huna and dust. So lets look for “Huna” and “dust”
separated by no more that 30 words. e Reverse English spelling for Huna is “hvna” and the
spelling for dust is “aqba”. Executing the following command nds that this string is in Masechta
Kesubos, daf 106a, at 39.4% of the word count or for a premium member on line 20, the 8th word
on the line.

e Rashi commentary on Talmud Bavli appears as a quote of a segment of the Mishnah or Ge-
mara (the “Dibbur haMaskil”) followed by the actual Rashi commentary. 22lookup will search for
the search string in both locations and will report successful nds based on location. at is to
say that if a search string is found in the Dibbur haMaskil and in the Rashi commentary, both will
be highlighted for convenience. Because the Rashi commentaries are relatively short, 22lookup
highlights the found text rather than providing a line number. Additionally, 22lookup will display
the number of the Rashi commentary (starting with the count of 1 at the top of the page and each
subsequent Rashi commentary incrementing the count).

more. e collection grows daily. Additionally, the sta at Sefaria (Daniel Septimus, Presi-
dent and Lev Israel, Chief Technical Ocer) has been very helpful to the 22lookup devel-
opment eort. Sefaria has unselshly allowed access to many digitized texts and lets users
be creative and use these texts in even for-prot applications without restriction. e vast
majority of digitized text necessary to fuel the 22lookup engine eminated from Sefaria.
Possibly 22lookup could be considered a mini-Sefaria with a dierent wrapper and dier-
ent packaging. e 22lookup sta has a dierent approach, a dierent design for the user
interface, and certainly believes that where Torah is concerned, alu v’ alu divrei chaim.
Sefaria users can view the William Davidson Talmud, somewhat similar to the Schotten-
stein Talmud at www.sefaria.org/texts/Talmud. 22lookup incorporates the capability to
display the Davidson Talmud in the free version. e Sefaria license grants individuals the
right to view the Davidson Talmud but not to use it for any commercial purposes.

Looking up everything in the Ain Mishpat Ner Mitzvah takes a lot of time. You are learning a
blatt, see the superscipt letter, look in the top outer corner of the amud, nd the right line of
the Ain Mishpat Ner Mitzvah, memorize the Sefer and Perek of the Rambam, go to your sefar-
im shank, identify the Rambam sefer but forget the perek. Back to the gemara and refresh your
memory. Return to your place and look up the Rambam.en you realize that the Tur and the
Shulchan Aruch also would be interesting and you go through the same motions again.
Here is where 22lookup can be of signicant assistance. Using the Amud and the superscript
letter, 22lookup can present the Rambam text, the Smag text, the Tur text, and the Shulchan
Oruch text being referred to by the Ain Mishpat Ner Mitzvah. e Amud is identied by the
masechta, the daf, and the amud while the superscript letter is used in its natural form or can
be referenced by English characters a, b, g, d, h, v, z, H, t, y, c, l m, n, etc corresponding to

Anecdote:
It has become a tradition in my wife’s family that I am asked to give a d’var Torah at simchas and
this is especially true at Sheva Berachos. I usually end the d’var Torah with a gematria ‘story’
that I weave using this very ‘gnd’ command. I enter ‘gnd chumash’, ‘gnd navi’, and/or ‘gnd
kesuvim’ and then type the names of the chosson and kallah straight from the invitation. I search
through the equivalent strings, select a few choice results, and weave that into a story about the
chosson and kallah. is has proven to be a “looked forward to” feature of the sheva berachos
week. Maybe the same will work for you!

just like the gematria string חוטב ךב יכ.
A word of caution about this style of gnd... it is very easy for 22lookup
to identify strings of this nature where the rst letters gematria sum equals the gematria of the
gematria_string. In the above example a gematria of 77 produced 5,470 phrases. High gematria
gematria_strings might produce many thousands of phrases. Finding the phrases takes a rela-
tively short time. Compiling the html code to produce the upper display takes a very long time
comparatively. In fact, the above exercise took 10 seconds to nd the 5,470 phrases and another
2 minutes and 5 seconds to compile the html.

A word of caution about this style of gnd... it is very easy for 22lookup to identify strings of this
nature where the rst letters gematria sum equals the gematria of the gematria_string. In the
above example a gematria of 77 produced 961 phrases. High gematria gematria_strings might
produce many thousands of phrases. Finding the phrases takes a relatively short time. Compil-
ing the html code to produce the upper display takes a very long time comparatively. While this
phrase using a gematria of 77 in Kesuvim required less than four seconds, high gematria gematria
_strings may take signicantly longer.
22lookup does not have a “kill switch.” If the program runs too long you may be advised to use
“Force Quit” from the Apple menu to shut down 22lookup.

22lookup was conceived, designed, and initially implemented in the PERL computer language
by Jan Buckler over the course of two years in an eort to facilitate Talmud learning, nd deni-
tions for words on a large scale basis, and just for fun! Because PERL is a fantastic language for
attack programming but not an appropriate language for program distribution, Moon Technolabs
Pvt Ltd (moontechnolabs.com) was engaged to assist in creation of an APP version of the PERL
soware. Moon Technolabs, their founder & CEO, Jayanti Katariya and their team of soware
engineers that worked on this project are deserving of high praise for their technical ability and
attention to detail... especially considering the complexities of this project. Once Moon Technol-
ogy created the initial framework using Objective C, Jan completed the content programming
using that language. roughout the project, there was great collaboration between all the de-
velopers. Jayanti and the Moon Technolabs team is higly recommended without reservation. For

Command Line Philosophy
Click or Type? That is, instruct an app to produce the desired result by lling out an input form
with buttons and text boxes or by entering text on a command line. There are benets in both ap-
proaches but, in the belief that a seasoned user can execute a command faster by typing than by
clicking through many many menus, especially in a program with as many features as this one,
the 22lookup designer chose implement an “old school” command line philosophy.
Suppose a user requests the word-by-word text of daf 11b of Masechta Megillah and types
blatt megillah 11b
and upon completion, wants to continue and look at the next amud 12a... he merely presses the
up arrow (which recalls the previous command to the command line with the cursor at the end of
the line) backspaces twice and enters “2a” so the command now appears
blatt megillah 12a
and a press of the Return key will bring up the next daf.
In time trials with the more common click methods, typing the commands in this manner was
much faster. Given the broad scope of the project, it is believed that there are many advantages
to this approach. Let us know if you have comments or strong feelings in this regard.

How do the times compare?
Reverse English
22lookup uses English characters to represent Hebrew characters in order to simplify typing and
programming. e user interface does provide for Hebrew input in searches but also allows the
use of the corresponding English which naturally is entered in the reverse direction.

You might inquire, “Why is this helpful?” On an iPad or an iPhone where the keyboard of one’s
choosing pops up... the question might indeed be a good question. On the Mac, where chang-
ing languages requires clicking the “language-selector” in the top-right, entering the command
using Hebrew characters and then changing back, it was found to be a time saver just to enter
everything using English characters. Additionally, as was mentioned before, the internals of the
program including the data les all are coded using Reverse English enabling standard comput-
er searching techniques (such as Regular Expressions) to function eciently before reverting to
Hebrew/Aramaic for display.

It might happen that a user will choose to have some Hebrew or Aramaic text displayed on the screen
and then wonder, “I wonder where else this word or words appear.” At this point, the user can position

22lookup was originally designed as a for-pay app with the “Standard” version being free while
access to the expanded functions embedded within app (“Premium version) required payment.
Based upon the inclusion of the tzuras from Hebrewbooks.org and the Sefaria Davidson Talmud
which both required their intellectual property to be included solely in non-commercial appica-
tions... it was decided to provide 22lookup without charge for the rst year. e course of action
following the rst year of release is yet to be determined. As always, suggestions will be appreciat-
ed and be made possible through the website 22lookup.org.

License
is Agreement grants you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable right
to use one copy of the Soware for use on a single computer and/or workstation for each
license that you purchase via the Premium purchase or that you are awarded based upon your
registration for the free version. You may obtain a license for the free version of the soware on a
yearly basis by updating your registration or you may obtain a license for the Premium version on
a yearly basis by purchasing a renewal, for the specifed amount of time in the materials accom-
panying the Soware. YOU UNDERSTAND AND AGREE THAT THE USAGE OF THE PRO-
GRAM IS SUBJECT TO YEARLY RENEWALS AND THAT THIS HOLDS TRUE EVEN FOR
THE FREE VERSION OF THE SOFTWARE.

exclusively by 22lookup and are protected by United States of America copyright laws and in-
ternational copyright treaty provisions. Any violation of the terms set forth herein is expressly
prohibited by law and may result in severe civil and criminal penalties.
Disclaimer of Warranties
ALL SOFTWARE PROVIDED BY 22lookup IS PROVIDED AS IS. 22lookup AND ITS
AGENTS, PARTNERS, OR EMPLOYEES MAKE NO REPRESENTATION OR WARRANTY TO
YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON OR ENTITY, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED, OR STATU-
TORY, AS TO THE DESCRIPTION, QUALITY, TITLE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, MERCHANT-

Export Control Laws.
You agree to comply with all laws, rules and regulations applicable to the export of the Soware.
Specically, you shall not export, re-export or transship the Soware, or the direct product
thereof, in violation of any United States laws and regulations which may from time to time be
applicable. None of the Soware or underlying information or technology may be downloaded
or otherwise exported or re-exported (i) into, or to a national or resident of, Cuba, Iran, Iraq,
Libya, North Korea, Sudan, Syria or any other country to which the U.S. has embargoed goods;
or (ii) to anyone on the U.S. Treasury Department’s list of Specially Designated Nationals or the
U.S. Commerce Department’s Table of Denial Order. By downloading or using the Soware, you
are agreeing to the foregoing and you are representing and warranting that you are not located in,
under the control of, or a national or resident of any such country or on any such list.
Jurisdiction and Other Provisions

Modications of Agreement
22lookup may modify this Agreement at any time without providing notice to you. Such modi-
cation will be made by posting a revised agreement on its web site and such modication shall be
deemed eective immediately upon posting of the modied Agreement. Your continued access or
use of the Soware or Services shall be deemed your acceptance of the modied Agreement. You

Termination or Modications of Soware
You may terminate this Agreement at any time. 22lookup may immediately terminate the Agree-
ment if you breach any representation, warranty, agreement or obligation contained or referred to

of the Soware by destroying the Soware. 22lookup reserves the right to modify the Soware at
any time without providing notice to you. 22lookup’s right to modify the Soware applies to all or

22lookup is hereby dedicated to the memory of R’ Moshe Neuschloss, Av Beis
Din of the Skverer community in Spring Valley, New York. R’ Moshe, my wife’s
grandfather, was a noted Dayan and a colleague of R’ Moshe Feinstein.
Shortly after World War II R’ Moshe Neuschloss managed to secure visas and
brought 50 orphaned yungerleit to the United States. Settling in Woodmere, NY,
R’ Moshe began to educate his charges and provided a home life shepherding them
until they married and set up homes of their own.

Hagaon R’ Moshe Neuschloss, z”l once visited a well-to-do man to solicit a dona-
tion for the mikvah. The rav asked the man for $25,000, but the latter hesitated, he
began to explain that he could not donate such an amount.
R’ Neuschloss replied that for the mikvah, one must exert himself even if it is dif-
cult, and assured the man that he would be amply rewarded for his contribution
with “kol melei d’meitov”, with everything that is good.
When the man heard this, he revealed that the doctors had just discovered that his
wife had a malignancy, r”l, and she desparately needed a refuah. If the Rav would
give his blessing the man would be willing to donate the entire amount which was
requested of him. He made out a check for $25,000 and the Rav gave the beracha.
A short while later, the man’s wife went for a medical examination, the doctor ex-
pressed his amazement. The malignancy had vanished - the woman was complete-
ly cured!! The man returned to the Rav, and with tears in his eyes thanked him.
The Rav in his simplicity, replied modestly, “You really don’t have to thank me.
